In late August 2007, we did a 3-day hike with our 2 kids in Wells Gray Provincial Park in the middle of British Columbia. Wells Gray Park is up north of Kamloops and west of the more famous Jasper National Park. There is a visitor center as you leave the main road towards the park where you can get information on hiking trails. Our trailhead was in the south of the park and served both the Battle Mtn area and the Table Mtn area. The trailhead is about a 12 mile drive up a 4x4 road. A lower trailhead -- to Battle Mtn only -- is reached in 8 miles. This first part can be driven in a regular car. The next 4 miles to the Battle/Table trailhead really is 4x4. We were in a Suburu Outback and we made it without ripping out the transmission but it requires steady nerves since there is no turning around once you commit to the road.

The trail up to the Fight Lake is about 8 km long and is not too steep. Our 6 yr old made it fine with regular energy (=candy) breaks. The camping at Fight Lake is on open meadows and is very beautiful. There is also a public cabin at Fight Lake, but it is tiny and run-down. However, it has a wood stove and kept us warm. From the Fight Lake cabin, it is 2-3 hrs to the top of Battle Mtn. I hiked/scrambled up Battle Mtn in the morning while the kids played animal games in the woods around the cabin and Karel chopped wood. By noon, I was back from Battle Mtn and we headed down around 2pm. On the way down, the kids and I took the trail to the lower trailhead while Karel took our ascent trail and got the car. This trail is much steeper. Ug. The kids and I got pretty hammered.
