Pat R suggested we head up to Silver Peak, so I agreed. We started from Ollalie Meadows, and headed south on the PCT.
There is a trail to get up there, and here's how to find it: continue along the PCT for about a mile or so. You will pass through an open, rocky area more or less below the summit of Silver. Then the trail drops down some switchbacks and continues on. When it gets under the saddle between Silver and Tinkham, there is a path heading off to the right. A cairn marks this path. Take the trail up to the saddle, then follow it out to Silver by going right. (Or follow it out to Tinkham by going left. Or, I suppose, follow it out to Abeil by going straight, though I haven't done that yet.)
Pat and I, however, were a little too anxious. Instead of following the pretty bomber trail all the way up, we got under the summit of Silver and just went straight up, bushwacking and scrambling. It was actually pretty easy (though unrelentingly steep). It would be possible to get into some seriously exposed situations, although with patience one can find a reasonably safe and easy route all the way to the top. We had patience -- mostly.
Time from the car to the summit via the direct route was about two hours. It took us longer than that to hike the trail back out.
