Four of us WACers hiked into West Oval Lake for a week of hiking/scrambling/swimming. I am just going to put out some observations and questions, if anyone wants more details please just email me.
First of all the Chelan/Sawtooth is very beautiful, with lots of larches, lakes, and granite. Somehow I had managed to never go there before, I'm glad I finally went! I would highly recommend this area, especially in the fall when the larches turn gold. Just be prepared for dusty trails (lots of horse traffic). However this is made up for by lots of great swimming lakes (my personal favorite: East Oval Lake).
Oval Peak is straightforward from Oval Lakes. Yes the summit talus field is big.
To whoever traversed from Oval to Courtney, how was that?
The north face of the peak above East Oval Lake (8267) appears to have really good (difficult!) routes on it, has anybody done this? Is this what people are calling "Buttermilk Butte"?
Courtney is a fun traverse (from Gray Pass to Fish Creek Pass).
Star is a fun climb from the west ("Star Pass"). I downclimbed some class 4 at the top descending on to the east ridge (I guess this could be avoided by traversing south side talus). I then traversed the headwaters of the East Fork of Buttermilk Creek to Hoodoo Pass. This was easy except for when I crossed a rock glacier by mistake (Never Do That). Plus I saw a bear, running away (this is the preferable direction for bears to be going). Has anyone run the ridge directly from Star to Hoodoo Pass?
Also has anyone climbed the NW ridge of Star (straight from Fish Creek Pass?)
I hiked up Bigelow from Hoodoo Pass. It looked like Hoodoo/Corax/Raven Ridge have fun rock climbs and we didn't have gear or time, so I skipped them, anybody have recommendations?
I did the west side of Martin and got scared. I think I went too high before connecting with the south ridge. Is the actual north ridge better? Then I went down the south ridge which is easy and over to Switchback which was fun, and bivied on top with the chipmunks and pikas. These 2 peaks would be great to go up with kids from the Cooney Lake side (except I think they let motor bikes go up the trail to near the lake, but we never actually saw any motor bikes).
Tuckaway Lake is cool. It's easy to go over to Eagle Pass (and then down the Eagle Creek trail). Alas, back to work...
