A great place for a solo trip and a chance to knock off some of the 100 highest peaks is the pasayten.  I always used to think it was really far
away.  The reality is that it's only a little over 4 hours to the westerly sections.  I drove highway 20 to Mazama and then the road to slate pass.
This is the highest road in the state.  !2 miles down the middle fork of the Pasayten and a steep climb to the pass beyond Fred's lake put me
at Lake Doris.  Doris is beautiful.  It looks over an array of peaks.  The nearby ones I had already done on a previous trip in.  So it was over
shellrock pass to the meadows east of it.  Here I dropped my pack and spent the rest of the day scrambling Pass Butte (8140') and Lost Pk
(8464).  Neither are hard, but there is a lot of up and downs traversing the ridge between them and returning to camp.  Day three I went back
up shellrock pass and scrambled to Lago pk ((8745).  It involves a lot of traversing on scree or an exposed climb on the thin ridge line.  I then
ran the ridge north over pk 8175, Dot mt (8220), and up Ptarmigin pk. (8614').  Ptarmigin and Dot are beautiful open areas and there are really
Ptarmigin there.   8175 had some real climbing to get around the gendarmes north of the peak.  The flaw with my trip planning was that in order
to return to shellrock pass I had to traverse all of the peaks again.  It made for a long day.
Day 4 I went up shellrock and climbed Blackcap pk (8397).  I had hoped to traverse over to lake and monument pks, but a cliffy ridgeline blocked
my way.  Blackcap was the most enjoyable climb of the trip.  The weather looked threatening, so i dropped down to the middle fork.  I saw my
first people there since wens morning.  It was Gary Peerless with an Outward bound group!  The last day was an easy hike back over slate
pass to the car.  Lot's of flowers are out right now.  So I got 7 peaks, 4 of which, were in the 100 highest.
